SPECTROSCOPY

WOLF RAYET STARS

Wolf Rayet stars are short lived hot massive stars which are shedding their outer atmosphere. They show distinctive spectra with strong emmision lines from Carbon, Nitrogen or Oxygen. Although they are rare, several examples can be found in Cygnus.

The two measured here (WR135, WR140) were easily recorded at mag 7-8 in 0.3sec exposures. A deeper 20sec exposure of the WR135 field showed that spectra down to at least mag 12 could be recorded, if a little noisy.

More examples of amateur spectra of WR stars can be found here
