LHIRES III - NEON CALIBRATION LAMP SPECTRUM

The internal neon calibration lamp spectrum does not have enough strong lines to be able to calibrate high resolution spectra in some parts of the spectrum. By taking longer exposures however (up to 60 sec  in some cases) it is often possible to identify weak lines in the lamp spectrum, either from Neon or from small amounts of Argon contamination. Note, not all lines listed in the Visual Spec  library appear in the lamp spectrum.) This page shows the lines I have been able to identify as potentially useful for calibration. The ones marked * have been successfully used to calibrate spectra.

All plots and identification of line wavelengths made using Visual Spec software

5490-5660A  2400 l/mm (from a neon exposure by Lothar Schanne)

H beta region 600l/mm (Neon lines in 6x60sec exposure)

H gamma region 2400l/mm  (Argon contamination lines)

5500-6000A  600 l/mm (Used for WR140 periastron observations)

6050 -7950A  600l/mm Neon and Argon lines (6 overlapping sections)

(Note the calibration fit is not exact as a linear fit was used to produce these plots. Further tests should be made to ensure any set of lines chosen produce a valid calibration)
