WEBCAM PHOTOMETRY

I have recently (September 2004) started to investigate more seriously this aspect of astronomy. Making precise and accurate photometric measurements with a CCD camera is challenging aspect of the hobby for an amateur and using a webcam instead of a commercial CCD astrocamera brings its own additional problems. As a beginner in photometry I have a lot to learn and I am also finding out more about the characteristics of my webcam based camera. I have discovered though that it is possible to overcome the limitations of the webcam and make useful observations. I hope what record here will encourage other webcam owners to try their hand at photometry.

NOTES

Feb 2006

BAA CAMPAIGN - BLAZAR OJ+287

Using photometric V,R filters An opportunity to compare my results with others as well as hopefully contributing data of scientific value

Oct 2005

TRANSIT OF EXOPLANET HD189733b

A few days after it was announced - egress only

Sep 2004 -Jan 06

SUPERNOVA sn2004et

These are my contributions to a light curve of this Supernova, produced by members of the Unconventional Imaging Group QCUIAG

April 2005

CATACLYSMIC VARIABLE GO COM

Observations of this star in outburst showing probable superhump variations.

Jan 2005

THE SATELLITES OF SATURN AT OPPOSITION

A tricky observation - the jury is currently out as to whether or not the results are meaningful.

Nov 2004

LIGHT CURVE OF ECLIPSING BINARY AD ANDROMEDAE

A convenient short period binary to practice on.

Sept 2004

TRANSIT OF EXOPLANET TrES-1

My first serious attempt at photometry. I took a series of images and then had to find out what to do with them - a real baptism of fire!

March 2003

DETECTING THE FLASHES OF THE CRAB PULSAR

Not exactly precision photometry - just an on/off detection but an interesting project and I was pleased to get a result

Oct 2002

ECLIPSE OF IO BY EUROPA

I knew absolutely nothing about photometry when I did this and so ended up "reinventing the wheel"!
